An author can include additional tidbits about the story, its development, and other things to give the audience a more immersive experience.

A look at the episode “Blink” from the television series Doctor Who
I took a look at some of the more recent elements of the Harry Potter franchise which, beyond the film adaptations has dug its heels into other ways to keep the spirit and interest alive.
Though I may be making an assumption here, I felt that most are familiar with the general premise of the novels, and that they were turned into a popular film series.
